Is There Anything I Should Do Before Meeting a Lawyer?
- Basic document preparation. This includes pay stubs, tax returns and any bills or collection letters. Your attorney will need to review these documents to determine which type of bankruptcy is right for you and to help you prepare your bankruptcy petition. Thankfully, much of this information is available online!
- While an attorney will pull your credit reports, it may be helpful to make a list of all the creditors that may not be listed on your credit report. This might include pay day loans, medical bills etc.
- Make a list of all of your higher valued assets, including real estate, vehicles, personal property, and any other valuable items. An attorney will go through a list of your assets with you when preparing your paperwork. However, it can be helpful if you have unique individual assets of value to have the item and estimated value written down.
- Research the bankruptcy process and the different types of bankruptcy available. This will help you understand the options available to you and the potential consequences of filing for bankruptcy. However, major caveat, sometimes reading information online may send you down the rabbit hole. If you have concerns, this is what hiring a lawyer is all about so that you can walk through any issues you have!
- Write down any questions you have for your attorney. This will help you make the most of your meeting and ensure that you get the information and advice you need.
